# Breitbart: Exit Poll Gives Republicans a 4-Point Edge on Immigration, but 57 Percent Say Trump's Policies Have 'Gone Too Far'

Breitbart's Neil Munro reports Republicans led 44 to 40 on which party handles immigration better, down from an 11-point lead in a pre-election poll. Breitbart's commentary reads the result as proof that enforcement still helps the GOP.

Republicans held a four-point advantage on immigration in Tuesday's exit polls, Breitbart reports, but the same poll shows most voters think the president's enforcement has gone too far.

The numbers. On the question of which party is better able to handle immigration, Republicans got 44 percent and Democrats 40 percent. Asked about Trump's enforcement of immigration law, 21 percent of Election Day voters said it "has not gone far enough," 23 percent said it is "about right," and 57 percent said it has "gone too far."

The gap from earlier polling. Breitbart notes the 44 to 40 result is narrower than a pre-election poll that gave Republicans an 11-point advantage among registered voters. It says higher Democratic turnout on Election Day may explain part of the seven-point difference.

Top issues. Citing CBS News, Breitbart says the economy was the top issue overall, followed by the state of democracy. Democratic voters ranked democracy first. Republican voters ranked the economy first and immigration second.

Breitbart's reading. The writer argues that many in the "gone too far" group only weakly oppose Trump's policies and do not see immigration as a top issue, and that they were swayed by news coverage focused on the turmoil of deportation. He also argues the GOP would have done worse had it not pursued arrests and deportations. Those are Breitbart's opinions, not poll findings.

Related. Our earlier reports covered NBC's poll showing Republicans ahead by 11 points on migration.

What we could not check. We have not seen the poll's questionnaire or tables. Breitbart says the exit polls were run by SSRS for a group of media outlets at 450 polling sites in 15 states, so the results do not cover every state.
