The man accused of ambushing two Philadelphia police officers now faces federal charges on top of the state case. Fox News reports that Eric Lewis, 35, was indicted Thursday in connection with the Oct. 10 shooting that killed Officer Shane Seiber and wounded his partner, Officer Hector Rodriguez III.

The federal counts. They include interstate commerce by robbery, discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon, theft of a firearm that has moved in interstate commerce, and possession of a stolen firearm and stolen ammunition. Fox says a conviction carries a statutory maximum of life in prison and a minimum of 10 years. Lewis also faces 76 state charges, including murder, homicide of a law enforcement officer and 10 counts of attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer.

What prosecutors said. U.S. Attorney David Metcalf of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania told a Thursday news conference: "Under federal law, Eric Lewis is not allowed to possess a firearm. He is a convicted felon under federal law. He is certainly not allowed to steal a firearm." He added, "No one attacks law enforcement without facing the consequences."

The shooting. Officers were sent in the early hours of Oct. 10 to a report of a man with a gun and met "significant gunfire," Fox reports. Both were later found wounded on a porch. Rodriguez was shot 12 times and remains hospitalized in stable condition. Seiber, 40, was an Air Force veteran, a 10-year department member and a father of two, with a 7-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter. He was promoted to sergeant after his death, and his funeral was held Oct. 20.

The record. Fox says court records show Lewis, who worked for the Philadelphia Water Department, has a criminal history dating to 2012: a theft and receiving stolen property conviction, then gun-related and simple assault convictions that brought probation in 2013, and a 2018 guilty plea to disorderly conduct involving fighting, again with probation.

The earlier case. Earlier this month, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said Lewis had been acquitted in a prior murder case, which he blamed on a "deeply flawed" investigation and conduct by one officer and one detective that he called "arguably criminal." The Philadelphia Police Department answered that "assigning blame while families are grieving does nothing to advance accountability."

Note for readers: Lewis is accused, not convicted. Details are as reported by Fox News.
