DoorDash Is in Advanced Talks to Buy Instacart in a Deal Valuing It Near $17 Billion, WSJ Reports
A deal could come as soon as this week, though nothing is guaranteed. Instacart shares rose about 8% Monday and DoorDash fell about 6%. Instacart was valued near $13 billion before the report.
DoorDash is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire grocery delivery company Instacart, Fox Business reports, citing the Wall Street Journal.
The deal. The Journal reported Monday that an agreement could come as early as this week and could value Instacart at roughly $17 billion. It cited people familiar with the talks and noted there is no guarantee they end in a deal.
The market reaction. Instacart shares rose about 8% Monday. DoorDash shares fell about 6%. Before the news, the Journal said Instacart was worth about $13 billion, compared with DoorDash's market value of about $73 billion.
Why it matters. A purchase would give DoorDash a bigger foothold in grocery delivery as it grows beyond restaurant orders. Competition in groceries has sharpened as Walmart and Amazon have expanded their offerings. Instacart weighed a sale in 2021.
The track record. DoorDash completed its purchase of Britain's Deliveroo about a year ago, effective in 2025 after court approval, and bought Finland's Wolt in 2022 in an all-stock deal. Fox Business also notes Instacart agreed to $60 million in consumer refunds after the FTC accused it of hidden fees and forced subscriptions.
Note for readers: this is a report of talks, not an announced deal. Neither company could be reached for comment when Fox Business published, and any deal could still face regulatory review.
