# Breitbart: Democratic Ads on Immigration Fell From Third Place in Primaries to 35th in the General Election as Candidates Ran on the Economy

Citing an Axios report, Breitbart's Neil Munro says Democrats moved away from immigration after the primaries and ran on affordability. He argues Republicans did too little to sell the economic case for enforcement. Pro-immigration groups read the results the other way.

Breitbart says the data shows Democrats ran away from immigration in the fall campaign. This is a news analysis from a publication that favors tighter immigration limits, and we say so here.

The data. Breitbart's Neil Munro cites an Axios report from Nov. 4 saying Democratic advertising about immigration dropped from third place among issues in Democrat-only primaries to 35th place in the general election. We did not see the Axios report or the underlying spending numbers.

The message. Munro points to Texas Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa, a Democrat, who told The New York Times her politics are "economic populism" aimed at "working Texans who are up against tech giants." He also quotes the Wall Street Journal saying centrist and far-left candidates alike "drilled down on the economy" and avoided culture-war fights, including immigration, that have cost Democrats before. Jonathan Cowan of the centrist group Third Way said the results are not "a mandate for impeaching the president" or for the Green New Deal and Medicare for All.

Breitbart's take. Munro says immigration was the Republicans' main strength in the election and that Democrats avoided it because voters back limits that help American wages. He argues Trump did too little to show the economic benefits of enforcement, such as lower rents, and that GOP candidates spent little on it under pressure from donors and employers who want more workers.

The other side. Pro-immigration groups see it differently. The American Immigration Lawyers Association called for bipartisan work on "a modern immigration system." The American Business Immigration Coalition said Hispanic, independent and rural voters punished Republicans over "mass deportations and high costs." Breitbart says a few Republicans and commentators are leaning toward a legalization deal, though it says the pro-immigration caucus of Rep. Marie Salazar was destroyed at the polls.

Why it matters here. Our earlier reports include exit polls showing Republicans ahead on immigration and the White House saying it will not allow mass amnesty. This piece adds an argument about why Democrats avoided the issue and what Republicans should do next.

What we could not check. We did not verify the ad rankings, the Journal and Times quotes or Breitbart's claims about wages and rents. Much of the piece is Munro's argument, not reporting.
