Sen. Ted Cruz is warning that Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed could endanger lives if he wins a Senate seat, Fox News reports.

The warning. Speaking Wednesday at a rally for Republican Mike Rogers in Grosse Pointe Woods, Cruz said: "If Abdul El-Sayed becomes the senator from Michigan, there is absolutely nothing to stop Chuck Schumer from placing Abdul El-Sayed on the Senate Intelligence Committee. The Senate Intelligence Committee has access to our most closely-guarded secrets. And if I am correct that he is a passionate supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, there is a very real risk that Americans will die as a result."

The claim. Cruz said U.S. troops are "fighting Muslim Brotherhood terrorists right now" and that covert operatives are working to stop attacks. "We have every reason to believe that Abdul El-Sayed, if he found out, 'OK, they're about to apprehend these terrorists,' that he would let those terrorists know," Cruz said. Fox describes this as Cruz's suggestion and does not offer evidence for it.

The denial. Last week, El-Sayed told Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier that he has "never been" and "never will be a member of the Muslim Brotherhood." He said: "I am interested in serving the United States. I'm interested in swearing an oath to the Constitution that every senator has swore an oath to."

The race. El-Sayed faces former Rep. Mike Rogers, who is backed by President Trump. Fox says neither campaign answered its requests for comment on Thursday. Our earlier stories on the Michigan race cover the Muslim Brotherhood dispute between the two campaigns.

Note for readers: committee assignments are made by Senate leaders, and nothing in the Fox report says El-Sayed has been offered one. Cruz's remarks are a warning built on an "if" and a prediction, not a report of any leak or any known tie.
