# China's State Paper Says the West's Democracy 'Myth' Is Losing Its Appeal After the US Midterms; Breitbart Calls It a Warning Shot at Critics of Beijing

Breitbart's John Hayward says Global Times used polls on democratic dissatisfaction to argue Western voters have lost faith, while Beijing purges its own officials. The paper's aim, he says, is to deflect criticism of China's system.

Beijing's state press has used the US election to make a point about democracy, Breitbart reports.

What the paper said. China's state-run Global Times wrote after the midterms that "the 'myth' of Western-style democracy is losing its appeal, even in the West," per Breitbart, which links the editorial. Breitbart notes that the paper put "myth" in scare quotes without attributing it to anyone.

The numbers it used. The editorial cited a Pew Research Center poll this year on satisfaction with how democracy works. Dissatisfaction was 69 percent in France, 68 percent in Spain, 62 percent in Italy, 47 percent in Poland and 69 percent in the US, the paper said, and added that Ipsos and Gallup tracking points the same way. It also cited an OECD survey in which 68 percent said voting has a significant or moderate influence on what government does, but only 31 percent were confident that people like them have a say. The paper concluded that Western dissatisfaction comes from institutions failing to respond to public demands.

Breitbart's answer. Hayward calls the editorial rich coming from a one-party state that, he writes, "just got finished sacking half of its top officials for corruption," and links an Oct. 30 Breitbart report on a military purge. He says the paper's real aim is not to talk Westerners out of voting but to stop the West from criticizing China's system. The Global Times lectured that there is no one-size-fits-all model of democracy and complained that some Western politicians use it as "a political instrument for export."

The close. Hayward notes Winston Churchill's line that democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others, and says that whatever a voter feels about an outcome, he gets another chance to vote.

Why it matters here. Our post-election coverage has shown voters unhappy with prices, the Iran war and candidate quality. The Global Times takes dissatisfaction of that kind and argues it shows a flaw in democracy itself. The poll figures are the paper's own citations of other groups' work.

What we could not check. We did not read the Global Times piece or the Pew, Ipsos, Gallup or OECD data it cites, and Breitbart does not check them either. The purge claim is Breitbart's characterization of its earlier report. Hayward's view of Beijing's motive is his interpretation.
