A man who admitted belonging to the Cartel del Noreste has been sentenced to 36 months in prison for conspiring to smuggle three people into the country, Breitbart reports.

The case. Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lt. Chris Olivarez said Miguel Angel Delgado-Guzman fled officers on Nov. 28, 2025. During the chase just south of Zapata, Texas, his vehicle rolled over after he entered a curve at an unsafe speed. Delgado-Guzman ran from the scene and was arrested. Officers freed three people trapped in the vehicle and handed them to Border Patrol. No one had significant injuries. He was booked into Zapata County Regional Jail on charges of smuggling of persons, evading arrest and resisting arrest.

The sentence. ICE Homeland Security Investigations announced the sentence in a Friday post on X, Breitbart says. HSI said Delgado-Guzman admitted he belongs to the Cartel del Noreste.

The designation. The cartel was one of eight groups the State Department first designated as foreign terrorist organizations in February 2025. Breitbart says Treasury sanctioned four people and several connected companies tied to the cartel earlier in October, and describes its use of businesses including a horse racing network, construction firms, gas companies and casinos to hide money.

What to keep in mind. The sentencing detail comes from an HSI social media post as relayed by Breitbart. We did not see the court record. The piece was written by a retired Border Patrol division chief.
