Border Patrol agents in the San Diego Sector arrested a Mexican national near Campo, California, who turned out to have a murder conviction, Breitbart Texas reports.

What happened. Agents caught the man after he crossed illegally shortly after midnight on Oct. 1, according to San Diego Sector officials. While processing him for removal, biometric screening showed he had been convicted of murder in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. He served 13 years and nine months in prison there.

What officials said. Chief Patrol Agent Justin M. De La Torre said the arrest "underscores the importance of our agents' vigilance along the border" and helps keep people who may "pose a threat to public safety" out of communities. The man remains in custody until he is removed.

The wider claim. DHS officials said that under President Trump and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, CBP and partners have arrested and removed thousands of criminal aliens. They also said no illegal alien has been released by Border Patrol into the U.S. interior in the past 17 months.

Note for readers: the man is not named, and we have no court record of the Mexican conviction. The details come from San Diego Sector through Breitbart. The crossing happened on Oct. 1, so the arrest is not new, though Breitbart ran the story today. The DHS figures are the agency's own and we could not check them.
