Bodum Recalls 5.9 Million French Press Coffee Makers Because the Glass Carafe Can Break and Burn Users
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says there have been 70 reports of breakage, 48 with burns. Owners are told to stop stirring with metal spoons and ask the company for a free plastic spoon and warning label.
A widely sold kitchen product is under recall, Fox Business reports, citing the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The recall. It covers about 5.9 million Bodum French press coffee makers with 8-cup and 12-cup replaceable glass carafes. The CPSC says the carafe can break during use if the glass is damaged or cracked, including if a metal spoon is used to stir the coffee, which raises the risk of burn injuries. The Bodum name appears on the frame and inner lid of most models and is engraved on the glass.
The reports. Bodum USA, which issued the recall Oct. 29, says it has received 70 reports of carafes breaking in use, 48 of them with burns. In a statement it said the rate of incidents is "extremely low," given that it has sold millions of the products in the U.S. for decades.
What to do. The CPSC tells owners to stop using metal spoons or other metal utensils to stir coffee in the glass carafe and to contact Bodum for a plastic stirring spoon and a warning label.
Where sold. The products were sold at Target, Walmart and coffee and home goods stores nationwide, and online at Amazon.com, Target.com, Walmart.com and other retailers, from 1974 through October 2026 for about $15 to $65.
