Serbian police shot and killed a knife attacker outside the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade early Wednesday, Fox News reports.

The attack. Around 12:15 a.m. local time, someone in black opened the door of the security booth outside the embassy, Serbian prosecutors say. The attacker threw one of two knives at a Gendarmerie officer, identified only as D.S., hitting him in the left cheek. The officer then drew his service weapon and fired several rounds, killing the attacker. Fox, citing authorities, says the attacker shouted "Allahu Akbar" while slashing the officer, who was "slightly injured."

The motive. Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said authorities are treating it as a terrorist attack. He said the attacker, a minor believed to be Serbian and from the town of Sabac, supported ISIS and showed a black flag with the group's symbol on his Instagram account, and that security forces had been monitoring him.

The response. Dacic said Serbia raised its terrorism threat level to the highest, with more police at sensitive sites and crowded public spaces. Israel's foreign ministry called it an "attempted terrorist attack." It said the attacker was "neutralized by local police," that no embassy personnel were hurt, and that the mission was closed at the time.

The history. In June 2024, a crossbow-wielding attacker wounded a Serbian police officer guarding the same embassy before the officer shot him dead.

The timing. The attack came a day after Israel's election. Fox does not report a link between the two.

Note for readers: details come from Serbian authorities as relayed by Fox. The investigation is open and we have not seen independent confirmation of the Instagram account or the attacker's identity.
