DHS Says Baltimore Stabbing Suspect Was an Illegal Immigrant Released Under Biden, Then Freed by New York Despite an ICE Detainer
Police say Abubakarr Barrie, 23, stabbed a 15-year-old girl on Oct. 22. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin blames open borders and sanctuary policy and urges Baltimore County to honor a new detainer. The charges are allegations.
A 23-year-old man accused of stabbing a 15-year-old girl in Baltimore entered the country illegally in December 2023 and was released under the Biden administration, the Department of Homeland Security says, according to Fox News.
The case. The Baltimore Police Department says Abubakarr Barrie is accused of stabbing the girl inside a home. Multiple reports say he worked as an unlicensed cab driver. DHS says Barrie picked the victim up and took her to a basement property he was renting. Per DHS, he stabbed her repeatedly until she escaped. It happened Oct. 22. He was arrested two days later, and ICE lodged a detainer the same day. Fox describes the charges as attempted murder and kidnapping of a minor. He is accused; he has not been convicted.
His immigration history. DHS says Barrie is from Sierra Leone and entered through Arizona in December 2023, was arrested by Border Patrol and was eventually released under the Biden administration. Earlier this year, Fox says, the New York City Police Department arrested him on a charge of third-degree possession of a forged instrument. ICE lodged a detainer then too. New York City officials released him in July.
The DHS statement. Secretary Markwayne Mullin said: "This tragedy would never have happened were it not for the multiple failures of sanctuary policies. First, Biden's open borders let this monster into our country, then sanctuary politicians in New York refused to hand him over to ICE and released him after a previous arrest three months before this horrific crime." He urged Baltimore County authorities to "honor ICE's detainer against this illegal alien."
What we could not check. Fox says it asked the NYPD and the City of New York for comment; it reports no reply. Fox does not say whether Barrie has a lawyer or has entered a plea. The account of the attack comes from police and DHS as Fox relays them; we have not seen charging documents.
