# Florida Democratic Senate Nominee Angie Nixon Draws Fire From Both Parties for Her Answer on Whether Cuba Is a Dictatorship: 'I Will Have to Take Their Word for It'

A Florida Senate nominee is under fire from her own party over a question about Cuba, Fox News reports.

The answer. Rep. Angie Nixon, the Democratic nominee and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, was asked by CBS News whether she considers Cuba a dictatorship. She said: "You know, that is what people have told me. I have never been to Cuba, and so I will have to take their word for it."

The dispute with CBS. Nixon wrote on X that CBS had made "a serious failure of editorial reporting," saying she was explaining that Cubans she has spoken with call it a dictatorship and that she believes them. CBS deleted its first post, which said she declined to answer, and reposted the interview with an editor's note saying the earlier version "did not accurately portray Rep. Nixon's answer."

The Democrats. Even so, her answer drew objections from her own side. Phil Ehr, the Democratic nominee in Florida's 28th District, said he saw "how frightened so many Cuban Americans are" at early voting sites. He called Cuba a "communist dictatorship" and said he would "not stand behind Angie Nixon or defend her remarks." Elliott Rodriguez, the nominee in the 27th District, said he and Nixon "agree on many issues," but that "Cuba being a dictatorship is not a matter of opinion. It is a fact."

The Republicans. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., wrote that "we now have a candidate for the U.S. Senate who can't define a dictatorship." Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., called the answer "the craziest thing I've ever heard" and said the Democratic Party is "fully consumed by socialism."

The background. Fox notes she joined the DSA months ago, and that in an August CBS Miami interview she said of Fidel Castro, "I don't believe he's someone that should be praised," while adding she does not agree with every DSA position. Her opponent is Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Fla.

Note for readers: Nixon's own account of her answer, and CBS's correction, are both part of the record. The Democratic objections are to the substance of the answer as given, and they come from two House nominees in the Miami area. We have not seen the full CBS interview.
