# Rep. Angie Craig Declined a 2019 Request to Refer Ilhan Omar for an Ethics Probe and Pointed the Complainant to the House Ethics Office Instead

Fox News Digital obtained the 2019 letters. A former Minnesota state lawmaker says his complaint went nowhere. Craig, Omar, the House Ethics Committee and the FBI all declined or did not answer Fox's requests for comment.

A fellow Minnesota Democrat was asked years ago to push for an ethics inquiry into Rep. Ilhan Omar and did not, Fox News Digital reports.

The letters. According to correspondence Fox obtained, Rep. Angie Craig wrote in 2019 to Steve Drazkowski, then a Minnesota state representative, after he urged her to seek a House Ethics Committee investigation of Omar. Craig did not take up the request. She told him he could file a complaint himself with the Office of Congressional Ethics, which she described as the independent, non-partisan body that reviews allegations against members of the House and accepts information from the public. Her reply came two days after his letter.

The allegations. Drazkowski's letter pointed to a Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board report from that month. He also said Omar filed joint tax returns with Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi in 2014 and 2015 when the two were not legally married. Fox says it obtained a board report showing the joint filings. Omar legally married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in February 2009, according to Newsweek, and the divorce was finalized in December 2017.

The board's findings. On June 6, 2019, the board found that Omar had improperly used $1,500 in campaign funds for personal tax-related services tied to those returns. It also required her to repay campaign money she used for travel to Boston, New York and Washington. Omar said at the time she was glad the process was over and glad the board did not find her guilty of using the money for personal use, as first alleged.

The follow-up. Drazkowski then filed his own ethics complaint. He told Fox he got no substantive response, and that he later gave what he had to the FBI's Minneapolis office and heard nothing meaningful back.

No comment. The House Ethics Committee and the FBI declined to comment to Fox. Omar and Craig did not respond.

Note for readers: the 2019 letters show Craig sent the complainant to the public complaint process. They do not show what, if anything, an ethics office did with his filings. The board's findings were about campaign-finance rules. Fox links the story to the federal probe of Omar's past marriage, which our earlier stories cover, and Omar's office has called that probe a smear.
