The group's president says it is a cost of living election and that Republicans need solutions, not just attacks on socialism. The numbers come from door conversations, not a traditional poll.

With Election Day Tuesday, the Daily Signal reports on what Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is hearing from voters in the closest Senate races.

The numbers. AFP says it spoke with about 10,000 voters in competitive states including New Hampshire, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas and Alaska. Fifty-six percent had an unfavorable view of socialism, up six points from the group's September survey. Fifty-nine percent said the Democratic Party is controlled by far-left socialists, up nine points since September.

How to read them. AFP president and CEO Emily Seidel said, "This is not a traditional polling survey." She described it as a report of what activists hear directly from voters. It is a conservative advocacy group's canvassing, not a random-sample poll.

The warning for Republicans. Seidel called this "a cost of living election," and said it has been one "for over a year." She cited polling that about 84% of Americans rank the cost of living among their top issues. She said Republicans held a 21-point trust advantage on the economy and inflation three years ago, but that Democrats now hold a slight edge.

What she says works. Seidel said candidates should offer concrete answers on housing, gas and groceries, such as cutting regulations that slow home building and expanding domestic energy. On socialism, she said it is "not enough to just attack socialism at the surface level." She pointed to rent control and government-run grocery stores as policies to explain and argue against.

Why it matters. The Signal notes a growing number of socialist candidates are running for Congress this year under the nickname "The Bloc," with an agenda aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America. Seidel said the contrast gives Republicans an opening if they pair criticism of those ideas with their own plans.
