Kansas Democratic Senate Nominee Adam Hamilton's Megachurch Urged Staff to Drop 'Boys and Girls' for Gender-Neutral Terms, Breitbart Reports

A children's ministry message given to Breitbart lists alternatives such as 'kiddos' and 'folks.' The outlet then reviews Hamilton's sermons and finances. We did not see the message, and the piece has no church response.

The Church of the Resurrection, the largest United Methodist congregation in the country, encouraged children's ministry workers to use gender-neutral greetings, Breitbart News reports. Its senior pastor, Adam Hamilton, is the Democratic nominee challenging Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan.

The message. Breitbart says it was given a message that begins, "Hey! In follow up from our conversation on Sunday about our words and working towards being more gender neutral so that all kids feel welcome," and promises a list of words to use "instead of boys/girls." An attached image of "Gender-Neutral Terms to Address a Group" includes "kiddos," "folks," "comrades," "niblings" and "peep-a-doodles." A credit line says it was inspired by two social media accounts, one of which Breitbart identifies as singer and LGBTQ activist Mila Jam.

The campaign angle. Breitbart says the message adds to scrutiny of the church. It notes a 2025 PrideFest sponsorship, Hamilton's support for same-sex marriage in the church, legal abortion and Black Lives Matter, and his 2024 vote and $500 donation for Kamala Harris. It also revisits his comments on scripture, the Virgin Birth and other faiths, and a 2020 sermon on cattle and carbon emissions. Marshall has criticized the cattle remarks. Hamilton's campaign said Marshall had himself discussed cutting methane from cattle.

The finances and the camp case. Breitbart repeats its Oct. 18 report that Hamilton's disclosure shows a net worth of up to $20 million and a $394,239 church salary. It also says Hamilton told CNN in October that church officials "should have called the police immediately" over abuse allegations against a camp volunteer in 2005 and 2006. Marshall accuses Hamilton of letting the man return as a counselor.

Note for readers: this is a campaign-season story from a conservative outlet. We did not see the message itself, and Breitbart's article does not include a response from the church on the list. Statements on theology are Hamilton's own words as Breitbart quotes them.
