A bloc of House Democrats is asking the administration to back off Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., a week before she faces voters, Fox News reports.

The letter. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., led 175 members of the House Democratic Caucus in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Attorney General Todd Blanche. It calls the investigation of Omar's immigration history a partisan attack. "We stand with Congresswoman Omar and condemn the weaponization of law enforcement against her," the letter says. It also says: "You have already disgraced the offices you hold."

The election argument. The Democrats say Omar is on the ballot in Minnesota's 5th District in a week and that news of a search warrant, "whether properly predicated or not, could affect voters' decisions." They call a raid 22 days before an election "unprecedented and unacceptable" and say DOJ has long avoided steps involving a candidate this close to a vote unless waiting would jeopardize an investigation. They say Blanche has cited that policy himself, as far back as nine months before an election.

The investigation. Federal agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant at Omar's Washington home on Oct. 12 and took phones and notebooks, among other items. Fox reports the probe asks whether Omar or her father gave a false birth year on immigration paperwork when the family left Somalia in the late 1990s. If she was 17 when her father became a citizen, she would have qualified automatically. If she was 18 or older, which federal officials now suspect, she would have needed her own application. The Democrats' letter says the probe concerns paperwork her father filed when she was a minor.

Where each side stands. The letter says the probe is "driven by a pre-determined political outcome rather than an objective pursuit of justice." Omar calls it a political hit job. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., has said she should be jailed and deported if the allegations are proven.

Note for readers: the allegations against Omar are unproven, and no charges have been announced. Fox says it asked DHS and DOJ for comment; the report does not include a response.
